In India the festival of Makar Sankranti (January 14) is marked with flying of kites especially in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. On that day one gets to see the sky captured with umpteen colourful kites of all sizes, shapes and designs. No wonder then the day is known as kite flying day. Everywhere people throng on terraces and roof-tops flying kites. Some even indulge in kite-flying battles. The strong thread used for flying kites is called as “Manjaa.” An International Kite Flying Festival is conducted at the Polo Grounds of Jodhpur for three days. Here a stiff competition for kite flying takes place. Additionally, a beautiful display of kites is also organised.
